The government had earned Rs.18.2 million so far from the eight ships that had berthed at the Hambantota Port, said Deputy Ports Development Minister Rohitha Abeygunawardane in Parliament yesterday.
Mr. Abeygunawardane said four foreign companies had already signed agreements with the government to invest in Hambantota due to the availability of the port.
He said, a Singapore-based company had agreed to invest US $ 434.5 million, an Indian company US $ 220 million and the Tatta Cement Company of Pakistan US $ 15.16 million.
“A fertilizer company will invest US $ 7.7 million. We have spent only US $ 361 million to build the port,” he said.
He was speaking during the debate on the adjournment motion moved by UNP MP Sujeewa Senasinghe. Mr. Senasinghe said in his speech that the Hambantota port project was a white elephant and that the project had been implemented without a proper feasibility study.
