In spite of the criticism by various groups of teachers and principals regarding the extension of school hours until 3 p.m. a group of teachers have commended the decision to extend school hours.
All-Ceylon Union of English Teachers (ACUET) General Secretary Stanley Perera said that the extension of school hours would permit the children to have more time to participate in extra curricular activities which they did not receive now.
“Physical education, aesthetic activities including dancing and music, life skills and even cultural activities are important. But unfortunately the children do not receive the chance to engage in these fields due to lack of time since other subjects have to be given priority.
“The extension of school hours would help to smoothen out that disadvantage in the current education system,” Mr. Perera said.
