The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has expressed deep concern over the Sri Lankan government’s move to establish a Media Development Authority to lay down guidelines for journalists.
IFJ General Secretary Aiden White said on Monday this move would further impede media freedom in Sri Lanka.
“The IFJ urges the government to acknowledge the value of independent codes of ethics, and to promote self-regulation in the interests of ensuring ethical journalism, which can flourish in an environment free from intimidation, censorship and government control,” Mr. White said in a statement. He also urged the government to observe and heed the principles as set out in the 2005 Tholangamuwa declaration where Sri Lankan journalists and media organizations agreed to support a democratic and pluralist media culture.
