Police refutes Sports Minister’s statement
DIG Administration N. K. Illangakoon yesterday refuted the statement made by Sports Minister C. B. Ratnayake charging that the police department is among the three most corrupt institutions in the country.
He said it is not clear on which basis the Minister made the statement. “We can decide whether to agree or not if there are any details that can be proved”, he said.
Minister Ratnayake made the charges on Monday at a press conference held at the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) head office.
“They should not just throw allegations against the police department”, DIG Illangakoon said.
“If there are allegations against the police department, the Bribery and Corruption Commission is there to probe such complaints”, he said. “The police department does not accept corruption inside the department or in any other institution”, he added.
He further stated that there are 85,000 in the department and if the complaints on corruption are low it should be taken into notice from the percentage not from the numbers.
