2,691 HR violation complaints against police

Dailymirror.lk:

The Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka has received as much as 11,732 complaints from 2009 to date and of them 2,691 have been against the Police Department, the government told parliament yesterday.

The figures were tabled in response to a question asked by United National Party (UNP) MP Dayasiri Jayasekara. In a supplementary question Mr. Jayasekara said it was surprising to see the Police Department being accused of a number of human rights violations.

“The Police Department is responsible for the maintenance of law and order and the upholding of human rights. We like to ask what happened to the investigations into the murder of FTZ employee Roshen Chanaka,” he said.
