In a bid to speed up investigations and follow-up action on errant public enterprises, the parliamentary Committee On Public Enterprises (COPE) will appoint two sub committees before it begins it work, COPE chairman and Minister D.E.W. Gunasekara said yesterday.
“It is not easy to carry out a thorough check on audit reports of some 240 public enterprises.
The COPE has accepted the suggestion I made to appoint two sub committees to probe annual audit reports of public enterprises referred to parliament by the Auditor General,” Minister Gunasekara said. He said the objective of appointing two sub committees was to speed up investigations and finish the work by December. This would help the government, the Attorney General’s Department and the public enterprises to take follow up action quickly.
The main criticism about the Wijedasa Rajapaksa report was about the long delay in taking follow up action on errant officials and institutions. The minister said he would with the Public Accounts Committee Chairman and Deputy Finance Minister Sarath Amunugama would convene a meeting of ministry secretaries to apprise them of the necessity to follow financial regulations on public enterprises.
