Regional anti-corruption activities

Over 500 public officials and CBO representatives from 82 ‘grama niladhari ‘ divisions in Polpithigama in the Kurunegala district were trained at 26 Workshops on Anti-Corruption and Good Governance conducted by TISL’s TISl’s Capacity Building Unit (CBU) .

Divisional Secretary- Polpithigama, R.M.Rathnayaka, Asst. Div Secretary, R.P.G. Podineris & TISL’s Sandun Gunawardana(TISL) were the resource persons.

A two-day  Basic Training Programme on Anti-corruption and Good Governance for elected members and office staff of Polpithigama Pradeshiya Sabha was held on 24 & 25 November 2009.

The topics discussed were:
 – What is corruption? -What are the causes of Corruption? -Consequences of the corruption – The Image of the corrupt person

Commissioner of Local Government, Kurunegala – ….. Weerasekara, TISL CBU Programme Coordinator,  Sandun Gunawardane addressed the gathering.

A secondary training progamme for selected participants who actively took part in basic training took place at Ibbagamuwa Training Centre on 26 & 27 November. These participants voluntarily came forward to draft an Action Plan aimed at curbing corruption in their area. A group of 40 participants including Pradeshiya Sabha ministers, public officials and CBO representatives took part.

Ethics and principles of public officials, legal aspects of corruption, complaining mechanism,   efficiency & productivity were among the topics discussed.

Among the resource persons were Bribery Commisisoner Director-General  Lakshmi Jayawickrama, Commissioner of Local Government- Kurunegala,….Weerasekera,  Divisional Secretary – Kurunegala, Nimal Kotuwala Gedara ( (Divisional Secretary- Polpithigama, R.M.Rathnayaka &  Assistant Div Secretary, R.P.G. Podineris  participated as resource persons.

TISL Capacity Building Unit joined Helvitas to conduct a two- day workshop on the theme of ‘Strengthening Transparency, Integrity and Accountability’  for Peace Co-existence Committees on 14 &  15 November in Batticaloa.
