LG poll this year

voteboxDailyMirror

The government has decided to conduct the local government election this year under the First Past the Post System, political sources said yesterday.

The government also intends to introduce necessary legislation in this regard very soon. In the last Parliament, the government presented the Local Authorities (Amendment) Bill seeking parliamentary approval to conduct local polls under the ward system. However, the SLMC challenged it in the Supreme Court.

The Court ruled that the government should get the approval of the entire provincial councils before presenting it in Parliament. Except the Eastern Provincial Council, all the other councils have already approved this Bill by a majority of votes.

The government is now planning to bring this Bill to Parliament and pass it with a two-thirds majority.

However, SLMC Deputy General Secretary Nizam Kariapper said that his party would oppose this Bill unless the proposals made by them are incorporated in it.
