Government officials pledge to take action against Corruption

 

Government officials of the divisional secretariat of Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte will take action in their official capacity to minimize corruption and fraud when implementing development projects of the area. They gave this assurance at a discussion with representatives of Transparency International Sri Lanka’s Shelter for Integrity , the legal aid centre recently.

They made this pledge after taking part in a training g cum discussion on for an accountable public service at their office. This is the third occasion that Shelter for Integrity had a discussion with public officials of the Colombo District divisional secretariats. The earlier ones were held at Maharagama and Moratuwa.

More than 40 officials including ‘grama niladharis’ took part in the discussion where they were taught how bribery and corruption can be identified and remedial action taken. The challenges they might face when trying to mitigate corruption was also discussed. The officials showed great enthusiasm and engaged in very productive interaction after each presentation .

After the discussion they willingly joined the volunteer network Shelter for Integrity has developed. The programme was conducted by Shelter for Integrity’s lawyer Jagath Liyanarachchi along with TISL manager Ananda Jayasekara and lawyer Asela Rajapakse. Sri Jayawardhanapura Kotte divisional secretary, Amal S. Edirisuriya was also present at the discussion.
