TISL statement on attack on Udayan News Editor

Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) vehemently condemns the attack on the News Editor of the Jaffna based ‘Udayan’ newspaper, Gnanasundaram Kuhanathan. TISL is most disturbed that this inhuman attack on a journalist holding a responsible position in an influential regional newspaper has taken place immediately after the democratic process was re-established in the North.
When media is expected to play a decisive and pivotal role in developing the war ravaged areas of  Sri Lanka, attacks of this nature hinders the smooth functioning of administration and hampers progress towards good governance.
The incident is a gross breach of peace and further tarnishes the image of Sri Lanka   reinforcing the assessment of being a dangerous place for media personnel. This situation does not go well with the government effort of improving international public relations  and restoring law and order in the North.
While the attackers have not yet been identified, it is heartening that HE the President has ordered the IGP to submit a report on the assault without delay. TISL urges the government to hold an impartial inquiry to this incident and deal with those responsible without fear or favour.
TISL also wish to stress on the need for the government to take effective steps to prevent attacks on journalists and help to protect media freedom in the country which is cornerstone of the democracy.
