General elections likely on April 8

Parliament is expected to be dissolved at midnight tomorrow and General elections are expected to be held on April 8, a top government Minister told Daily Mirror online on the condition of anonymity.

The final session of Parliament was held last Friday and President Mahinda Rajapaksa who is currently in Russia is expected to sign the papers tomorrow dissolving parliament in order to conduct the General elections, the official said.

Nominations for the General elections will be called between February 19-26, the Minister further added. The key political parties contesting the elections including the ruling UPFA and the main opposition UNP are in the process of finalizing the nominations of their parties for the elections.
