PPPR Media Report Alleges State Media Acted Arbitrarily

Except for two candidates Mahinda Rajapaksa and Maithripala Sirisena all other candidates received near zero coverage and the state media acted in a highly arbitrary and haughty manner even paid no respect and attention to the Election Commissioner’s guidelines and warnings during the last Presidential Election said media monitoring team of the TISL.

This was revealed at the launch of PPPR final report Electoral Integrity which captured the many instances of misuse of public resources/funds and manipulation of state media

Ananda Jayasekera from Transparency international Sri Lanka presenting the observations of state media during presidential election 2015 stated that the objective of the study was to monitor, make recommendation and to introduce best practices to the media   in order to promote healthy media culture in Sri Lanka.

The recommendations highlighted the importance of ssetting up of an independent print and broadcasting authority, providing both print and electronic media journalists with further opportunities to enhance their capacities and empowering the Election Commissioner to act instantaneously and decisively when his guidelines and warnings regarding the behaviour of media (both state and private) are disregarded or breached.
