Transparency International Sri Lanka (TISL) expresses serious concerns about the threats on MTV/MBC offices and its staff and request Inspector General of Police, Ministry of Defense and the Government to take immediate steps to ensure their safety.
TISL in a statement urges the relevant authorities to take action immediately to hold a full inquiry into the complaint made by CEO of MTV at the Slave Island Police Station to ensure protection to the media institution.
CEO of MTV has lodged a complain to the Slave Island Police Station citing members of the staff being followed by individuals have acted in a threatening manner and they have received credible information about a possible attack on station’s studios in Rathmalana and Pannipitiya.
Citing these threats as yet another blow to media freedom in the country, TISL Executive Director, S.Ranugge said that media should feel free to present news and views independently and such acts should be strongly denounced.
Hence, TISL requests the IGP, Ministry of Defense and the Government to take necessary action ensure the safety of the media organization and the staff members.
