‘Alleged irregular HiCorp transaction can’t be bigger than COPE findings’

The Island

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva says General Sarath Fonseka is facing a three-year jail term for violating procurement procedures, whereas those exposed by parliamentary watchdog committees, COPE and PAC as well as the Auditor General’s Department remained free.

The JVPer says the government is yet to take either disciplinary or legal measures against politicians and officials for brazenly violating tender procedures relating to mega deals.

Addressing the media at the party head office, Silva alleged that the government had protected the politician responsible for the Mavil-aru fraud. An irate JVPer said that the COPE and PAC had revealed shady deals, waste, corruption and irregularities over the past few years. The JVP official said that the HiCorp deal couldn’t definitely have been bigger than the findings made by the COPE.
